- Seeking an Engineer or Engineering Associate to specialize in powers systems for electric utilities. The Electrical Power Systems Engineer will work on various projects as assigned by the Manager. The Engineer may work on several concurrent projects and at times may assist as a technical expert on a specialized design or project. The position can be filled as either an Engineer, or Engineering Associate depending on the skills, education and experience & qualifications of the successful candidate. The Engineer shall have 4 or more years of relevant engineering experience in utility electrical system. The Engineer shall have the ability in designing, identifying opportunities and challenges, applying engineering calculations, and developing the most complete and competent options in distribution, substation, or transmission systems. The Engineer shall apply professional engineering knowledge to support operation of the distribution system, analyze models and advanced operational systems applications, perform quality reviews of project deliverables, provide reliability support to operate power systems in a safe manner.
Responsibilities:
- Performing distribution design, basic engineering calculations, delivering solutions as well as a variety of other tasks as assigned by electric utility clients.
- Creates distribution designs, produce and directs drawings and CAD operations.
- Working knowledge of GIS, MicroStation and AutoCAD software required.
- Capable of acting for Lead Engineer as required.
- Prioritize and organize work to manage multiple projects and meet strict deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to manage project costs, timeline, scope, and risks
- Provides project budget estimates, forecasts and monthly spending projections
- Communicate and build positive relationships with customers, engineers, customer service, sales, corporate partners and line crew personnel.
- Provide excellent customer service both internally and externally.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Required:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (B.S.E.E.) or equivalent from an ABET accredited university preferably with a power option.
- Minimum 4 years of relevant engineering experience in utility electrical systems
- Engineer in Training certificate (EIT) or ability to obtain one upon hiring
- Familiarity with distribution design and software, both overhead and underground distribution designs, reliability indices, the National Electric Safety Code, and utility best practices.
- Distribution design typically includes, but not limited to, physical design, electrical design, and developing a bill of materials.
- A basic understanding of overhead and underground distribution circuits, distribution planning and modeling software.
- Knowledge of electrical system operations and controls, distribution systems, underground and overhead construction practices and procedures.
- Knowledgeable of distribution design, relay coordination, protection settings, and device control. Also, should possess the ability to identify automation equipment needs (type, settings, relays, coordination, comms, testing, commissioning etc.) for distribution and substation equipment.
- Knowledgeable of relay coordination, protection settings, and device control.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively handle a broad range of engineering assignments with minimum supervision
- Excellent project management skills that lead to desired results as well as documented meeting committed delivery dates.
- Understands equipment and automation limitations across large areas.
- Must have valid Texas driver’s license.
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to write professional and technical reports and procedures. Ability to make formal and informal presentation to technical and non-technical staff and customers.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail, and scheduling.
- The candidate must have strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills to work effectively with internal team members and external client personnel
Preferred:
- Strong Technical Engineering Skills and understanding of Power Systems are highly desired.
- Proficient with MS office products and other related engineering Software systems highly desired.
- Knowledge of the Distribution Design, Planning Manual, Distribution Bulletins, Engineering Handbook/Specifications, Distribution Operating Procedures, ARC Flash Requirements, Metering & Service Standards preferred
- Preferred Professional Engineer’s License (PE) in the State of Texas
