Visit and follow @Nature / @NaturePortfolioAbout the RoleWe are seeking a Deputy Editor with a strong background in research and editorial experience to join Communications AI & Computing – a new multidisciplinary, open-access journal in the Nature Portfolio. This new launch will publish research spanning the broad landscape of computational science, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, and their applications in addressing complex scientific and societal challenges, encompassing both fundamental and applied research, from the development of algorithms, tools, and frameworks that advance scientific discovery to methodologies that utilise computational approaches to generate insights and solve real-world problems. The journal will initially be run jointly with Nature Communications, with a combined internal team and a joint Chief Editor, but with a separate Editorial Board. Communications AI & Computing complements our other Nature Portfolio open access titles, such as Nature Communications, the other Communications series journals, Scientific Reports, as well as the suite of NPJs.The Deputy Editor at Communications AI & Computing will be responsible for leading the journal’s editorial strategy, liaising closely with the Chief Editor for building and managing a diverse and efficient Editorial Board, and for managing part of the team of internal editors. Key responsibilities of the Deputy Editor include support of launch activities, outreach to relevant communities, and ensuring the Editorial Board Members cover the full breadth of subject areas and are engaged.The position is offered on a full-time basis.Responsibilities:Working with the Chief Editor to define journal aims and scope, develop the website, plan outreach activities, and work with internal teams to set up the journalLine-managing part of the internal team at Communications AI & ComputingGrowing the editorial board to ensure adequate subject area coverage across the topics covered by the journal, in consultation with the in-house team and the Chief EditorOverseeing and developing Editorial Board Member engagement with the journalHandling original research papers and working closely with other editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review, at a 50% workload of a Senior EditorLiaising extensively with editors at other journals in the Nature Portfolio family and with experts in the international scientific communityAttending conferences and visiting research institutions (in person and online).Commissioning Reviews and Comment articles and writing EditorialsSuggesting and overseeing Collections according to Collections programmeEnsuring Production receives manuscripts in an appropriate and complete stateOther tasks as requiredTo be considered for the position, you will have:A PhD (or equivalent) in a discipline immediately relevant to computational sciencePrevious experience coordinating peer review and making independent manuscript decisions within a world-class STM publishing companyExperience working with an external editorial board is desirableA genuine passion for scientific communication and promoting rigor and transparency in reporting researchExcellent communication and interpersonal skills and fluency in English (written and spoken)An eagerness to engage with scientists worldwide, learn more about them and their research, and help them learn more about us and what we are looking for in the papers we seek to publishStrong workload management and organisational skillsThe ability to work independently and as part of a teamThorough knowledge of the scientific community and its needsTo Apply:Applicants should include a CV, a cover letter explaining their interest in the post, and a 500-word outline of their vision for Communications AI and Computing, including the publishing landscape, opportunities, and potential challenges.
