If so, come join our team! Prince William County is looking for an experienced Senior Business Tax Inspector. The incumbent will perform difficult paraprofessional work involving analytical and technical work in the inspection and auditing of businesses, resolve complex business tax cases, and provide guidance to business tax inspectors. The position reports to the Tax Compliance Manager and is part of the Compliance Team. - Provide guidance to other inspectors by reviewing their methods to resolve complex cases; troubleshoot problems; and provide training as needed;
- Plan and conduct on-site inspections of business/commercial locations to identify unregistered or unlicensed businesses and unreported personal property;
- Conduct routine audits of various state and local tax documents and federal tax schedules to determine taxability and ensure compliance with local business tax laws;
- Research and analyze factors to determine appropriate business property values, gross receipts and tax liability;
- Determine the appropriate course of action required to bring resolution to site-inspection cases not in compliance;
- Prepare formal written reports, work papers and spreadsheets of on-site inspection cases;
- Advise taxpayers in the interpretation of state and local business tax codes;
- Audit fixed asset statements to ensure proper asset classification, depreciation schedule and proper tax rate assessments;
- Review tax appeals, initiate statutory assessments, and recommend cases for business tax audits, and delinquent tax collection actions;
- Analyze, review, and initiate appropriate actions to reconcile and bring resolution to complex tax cases;
- Analyze and adjust erroneous gross receipts and reconcile amended returns;
- Maintain effective working relationships with other County employees and the general public
Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or G.E.D. and 4 years of experience in business taxation assessments, preferably in the public sector.Preferences: The successful candidate will. . .
- Have a thorough working knowledge of the Business, Professional, and Occupational License tax, Business Personal Property tax, and other local business taxes;
- Have general knowledge of laws, ordinances and regulations governing the work;
- General knowledge of the principles and practices in developing and implementing tax education programs and solutions;
- Have general knowledge of the principles and practices of accounting and auditing.
- Have experience researching and analyzing factors to determine taxability and ensure compliance with local and state business tax laws;
- Able to determine the appropriate course of action required to bring resolution to complex tax cases;
- Be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees and the general public;
- Have the ability to analyze and prepare various reports;
- Superior communication skills both verbally and in writing;
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to an Associate Degree with major course work in business or tax administration, supplemented by accounting, and over 5 years’ experience in business tax inspections, business tax assessment or related activities, preferably in the public sector.
