Position SummaryUNM Online is looking for a person who enjoys the process of turning data into insight and working collaboratively with an exceptional team to join us as our Business Intelligence (BI) Manager. UNM Online is a department of about 15 people focused on expanding opportunities through the power of education. This position plays a pivotal role in advancing online education by leading the unit’s business intelligence operations. This position oversees data-driven initiatives that support the development and delivery of online courses, degree programs, and institutional priorities.
As the leader of the UNM Online Analytics Team, the Business Intelligence Manager is responsible for the design, implementation, and delivery of innovative BI solutions that inform both operational and strategic decision-making. The role requires strong, collaborative partnerships across departments and campuses to identify data needs, ensure the integrity and usability of reports and dashboards, and translate insights into action.
In addition to driving internal impact, this position contributes to a broader community of higher education data professionals-sharing best practices, fostering innovation, and helping shape the future of data-informed online learning.
At UNM Online, the Business Intelligence Manager operates in a hybrid work environment that allows work from home but also involves occasional to frequent travel for in-person meetings and events at the Albuquerque Campus and other locations.Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage the Analytics Team at UNM Online, including supervision, mentorship, and performance management of team members.
- Oversees the design, development, and maintenance of dashboards, reports, presentations, and other visualizations utilizing enterprise business intelligence (BI) tools and services to support operational, programmatic, and strategic decision-making.
- Collaborates with stakeholders and unit leadership to translate reporting needs into BI requirements. Identifies and integrates appropriate data sources in coordination with other stakeholders.
- Leads development and maintenance of existing and ad hoc reports and dashboards from multiple internal and external data sources. Oversees integrated analytical studies.
- Makes recommendations and coordinates with internal and external teams to guide the design, delivery and maintenance of the unit’s data repositories and data collection tools.
- Supervises personnel which typically includes day-to-day training, coaching, mentoring and work allocation. Also participates in recommendations for hiring, firing, performance evaluation, and problem resolution.
- Maintains knowledge of institutional databases and data sources, ensuring alignment of reporting processes with data governance policies, regulations, and guidelines.
- Validates data, reports, and visualizations for accuracy, integrity, and conformance with standards. Identifies and resolves reporting issues and data quality concerns.
- Oversees documentation of BI processes, data definitions, and reporting logic to support transparency, reproducibility, and compliance. Ensures documentation is complete, accurate, and complies with all applicable regulations and guidelines.
- Develops and delivers training to staff and end-users on BI tools, reports, and visualizations as appropriate.
- Provides project management for BI development project supporting operational improvements, process optimization, and strategic initiatives.
- Serves as primary liaison for BI-related initiatives, representing the unit in institutional BI and data governance committees and communities.
- Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to trends in business intelligence, data visualization, analytics technologies, and higher education practices.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Conditions of Employment
Minimum QualificationsBachelor’s degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience managing teams in a higher education setting.
- Experience supervising data analysts and developers.
- Experience with query tools or languages such as SQL, Power Query, or DAX.
- Experience with ibi WebFocus, Microsoft Power BI, or a comparable business intelligence tool.
- Experience interpreting and navigating large datasets in higher education. Experience with Ellucian Banner and Salesforce.
- The ability to translate complex data into actionable insights.
- Experience with the Microsoft Office suite, including Teams, Outlook, Excel, Word, Access, and experience with Zoom or other virtual meeting tools.
- Experience overseeing cross-functional projects and collaborations across the university.
- Personal or professional experience with online learning and educational technologies, and familiarity with online education models and metrics.
