Location: Jackson, MI 49201Position Overview:
CMS Energy is seeking a Startup, Testing, & Commissioning –EPM Technical/Procedure Writer & Trainer to support projects by delivering high-quality technical documentation, commissioning oversight, and training support. This position will serve as a key liaison across departments to ensure consistency and compliance in testing, startup procedures, documentation, and technical training.Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and oversee startup, testing, and commissioning processes for newly installed or modified mechanical and electrical systems.
- Develop and manage project-specific commissioning plans, schedules, test procedures, quality control measures, and turnover documentation.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical prints, P&ID drawings, and ensure documentation reflects as-built conditions.
- Write and maintain clear, accurate, and technically sound procedures and training documents.
- Coordinate and facilitate vendor-supported equipment startups and align commissioning efforts with plant operations.
- Execute or supervise testing on:
- Electrical components: cables (Low/Med/High voltage), switchgear, MCCs, transformers, system protection devices, motors, etc.
- Instrumentation and control systems: calibration, troubleshooting, programming.
- Mechanical systems: hydrostatic, pneumatic, and other operational tests.
- Apply relevant industry standards (IEEE, NETA, NEC, NFPA 70E, OSHA).
- Plan and coordinate training for newly installed equipment and systems.
- Provide leadership or mentorship to technical staff and ensure standard practices and safety protocols are upheld.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering, Construction, Operations, and external vendors to resolve issues and support successful project execution.
- Identify procedural and training needs, and develop custom content as required.
- Support design validation and project handover processes across EPM projects.
Required Qualifications:
Education & Experience (one of the following):
- Bachelor’s Degree in a scientific or technical field with 4+ years of relevant experience.
- Associate’s Degree in a scientific or technical field with 6+ years of relevant experience.
- High School Diploma/GED with 8+ years of relevant experience.
Technical Proficiencies:
- Proficiency in reading and updating electrical schematics and P&ID drawings.
- Strong understanding of startup and commissioning standards (IEEE, NETA).
- Experience with NEC, NFPA 70E, OSHA 10 & 30, NERC standards, and MPSC Gas Code.
- Hands-on experience in component-level testing, calibration, loop testing, and functional verification.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, etc.).
Soft Skills:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven ability to lead or mentor technical teams.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving capabilities.
- Excellent time management and coordination across cross-functional teams.
Preferred Skills:
- Prior utility industry experience, including knowledge of utility operations and compliance requirements.
- Experience supervising technical teams or contractors.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver technical training.
