We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Mainframe Computer Operator 2 to perform mid-level mainframe operations work, including operating large-scale system consoles, printers, and peripheral equipment at a complex operations site. The ideal candidate will monitor job processing, ensure system performance, and assist in resolving operational issues that may affect job execution across state agency systems. This is a working-level position requiring hands-on interaction with job control systems and output processing devices.Distinguishing Features:
This position differs from Mainframe Computer Operator 1 in that it involves greater responsibility in managing job workflows and resolving operational disruptions. It is distinct from Mainframe Computer Operator 3, which involves coordination of multiple operations and higher-level oversight of system processing.Key Responsibilities:Monitor and control mainframe production jobs via the master console; troubleshoot jobs that exceed operational parameters by adjusting priorities, canceling or resubmitting tasks as neededOperate and maintain peripheral devices such as printers, tape drives, card readers, bursters, decollators, and shredders; perform basic maintenance and replace consumablesManage tape library operations; retrieve, clean, and catalog tapes and resolve issues with automated tape systemsIssue operational commands to initiate or halt system jobs; mount and configure tapes, disks, and microfiche outputsPrepare and distribute printed or microfiche output, ensuring secure handling of negotiable documents and accurate job separationPerform system backups and data recovery processes; monitor backup status and take corrective action for hardware or data errorsLearn and perform basic data entry and system update functions as authorizedSubmit jobs for processing; verify input data and log execution details for trackingAssist users in resolving terminal, printer, and connectivity issues; determine problem sources and engage vendors for hardware service as neededAssist in training junior operators on equipment usage, job monitoring, and troubleshooting proceduresMinimum Qualifications:Education: Graduation from a standard high schoolExperience: At least 1 year of full-time employment in one of the following:Submitting/monitoring jobs or operating mainframe peripherals (e.g., printers, tape drives)Data entry or verification into a mainframe or minicomputer systemData processing or correcting codes for keying into a computer systemWord processing on mainframe/micro/minicomputer systemsTroubleshooting hardware/software issues on computing systemsAcceptable Substitutions:Experience for Education: Up to 4 years of office clerical, storekeeping, or computer operations experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basisVocational Education for Experience:Data processing or computer electronics repair (1296 clock hours) = 1 year experienceOne-year computer operations certificate (53 quarter hours) = 1 year experienceCollege Education for Experience:18 quarter hours in computer or information sciences may substitute for 1 year of experienceSpecial Requirements:A valid vehicle operator’s license may be required depending on assignmentMust be able to work rotating or fixed shifts, including nights and weekendsThanks & Regards,
