Job description: Microsoft Azure is looking for a Director of Data to lead a high-performing team of data engineers and data scientists in building scalable, high-impact data solutions. This role is instrumental in shaping Azure’s data strategy, optimizing customer experiences, and driving business growth through data-driven product innovation. You will work closely with global teams, including product managers and engineers, to develop and leverage data insights that directly inform product decisions, feature development, and user experiences. As part of the Azure Experiences & Ecosystems (AX&E) team, you will play a critical role in enhancing Azure’s platform by delivering user-centric, data-driven features and ensuring seamless interactions for customers.As the Director of Data, you will lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team in designing and delivering data-driven solutions that fuel Azure’s growth and customer satisfaction. In working closely with product managers, designers, and engineers you will help translate data insights into impactful product improvements, and present technical insights as well as strategic recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, empowering informed decision-making across the organization. - You will develop and implement data strategies aligned with Azure’s business goals and customer needs.
- You will design and deploy real-time monitoring systems and dashboards to track product health, identify trends, and generate actionable insights.
- You will establish and track key performance indicators (KPIs) in collaboration with product and engineering teams to measure feature impact and business success.
- You will ensure data integrity, security, and compliance with industry best practices while advocating for responsible AI implementation, data privacy, and security best practices.
- You will leverage machine learning and predictive modeling to anticipate customer behaviors, feature adoption patterns, and market trends, enabling more effective product decision-making.
- You will define success metrics, conduct A/B testing, and perform pre/post analyses for feature launches to ensure data-driven validation of product decisions.
Qualifications:Required Qualifications:
- Doctorate in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or related field AND 8+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
- OR Master’s Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or related field AND 10+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
- OR Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or related field AND 12+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
- OR equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of people management experience in data engineering, and data science.
- Experience in designing and managing large-scale data pipelines, distributed systems, and data analytics solutions that support product development.
- Hands-on proficiency with technologies such as Azure, SQL, PySpark, Python, C#, Hadoop, Apache Spark, Delta Lake, and CI/CD pipelines.

- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Deep knowledge of AI ethics, data privacy, and compliance standards.
Experience in product analytics, A/B testing, and using data to refine product experiences. * Demonstrated ability to lead high-impact projects and foster cross-team collaboration.
- Experience in fleet/inventory management, telemetry, IoT, or similar domains is a plus.
- 7+ years people-management experience.
Data Science M6 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $161,600 – $286,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $209,600 – $314,400 per year.Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
