Job description: Carnegie Mellon is embarking on a new strategic initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) to innovate mathematics education. This project draws on the expertise of Carnegie Mellon University’s leading minds in math education, learning sciences, and AI, to reimagine a math curriculum designed to dramatically improve student outcomes and ensure that race, ethnicity, and income are not predictors of postsecondary success. Our approach aims to leverage existing momentum, embrace iterative and collaborative processes, and balance innovative explorations with market-ready solutions in math education.The Content Development Director will oversee the creation and refinement of mathematics courseware, including video, text, and interactive learning activities, to ensure it meets high educational standards and aligns with the initiative’s pedagogical goals. This role is responsible for leading a team of distributed content authors, managing a large-scale contract and relationship with a content consulting firm, and staying current with research in mathematics education. The Content Development Director will collaborate with Carnegie Mellon University’s learning engineers and researchers, as well as the technology team in the new initiative, to deliver evidence-based, impactful courseware. As part of the leadership team, this position plays a critical role in shaping content strategy and ensuring alignment with both theoretical and practical advancements in learning science.Core responsibilities include:
- Lead the development and refinement of math courseware content, including instructional videos, written materials, and interactive learning activities, ensuring high-quality, engaging resources that address student learning needs.
- Manage and mentor a team of distributed content authors, providing guidance and feedback to maintain content standards and drive continuous improvement.
- Oversee the content consulting firm partnership, managing contracts to ensure the firm’s deliverables align with project goals, timelines, and quality standards.
- Conduct research into current theories and best practices in mathematics education, integrating findings to keep content aligned with the latest advancements in pedagogy.
- Ensure all courseware content aligns with the skills graph (knowledge/action/skills) and actively contribute to refining the graph based on data-driven insights and ongoing research.
- Collaborate closely with CMU learning engineers and researchers, working to embed evidence-based learning engineering principles within the course content and address student learning challenges.
- Coordinate with the technology team to ensure seamless integration of content within the platform, aligning technical functionality with content needs for optimal student engagement.

Qualifications:
- Master’s degree or higher in Mathematics, Education, Curriculum Development, or a related field.
- Extensive experience in educational content development, particularly in mathematics or STEM courseware, with a strong understanding of effective instructional design for diverse learners.
- Proven leadership experience managing distributed teams and overseeing large-scale projects or vendor contracts.
- Familiarity with skills graphs or knowledge mapping in educational content, with a data-informed approach to content refinement.
