Job description: Description of WorkThe NC Disability Determination Services (NCDDS) Division is the state agency responsible for making medical determinations on disability claims for the Social Security Administration and state Medicaid office. The division adjudicates over 140,000 initial disability applications, reconsiderations, reviews for continuing eligibility, and continuing disability review appeals under the Social Security and Supplemental Security Income program and disability applications for Medicaid. Applications are forwarded to Disability Determination Services (DDS) from local Social Security offices or in the case of Medical Assistance claims, from the County Department of Social Services offices. Agency personnel are responsible for obtaining medical and vocational information on applicants, evaluating the findings under Social Security Administration (SSA) disability criteria and preparing determinations and notices to advise the Applicant of the decision on the claim.The Processing Center serves as the point of receipt and distribution for incoming federal and state disability claims and associated mail. Processing Center functions include: keying of claims data to establish a computer record; assignment of claims to case processing units according to information provided by executive management; distribution of DDS mail; packaging and stamping of outgoing mail, disability claims folders, and related materials; and inventory. The Processing Center receipts all Medicaid claims which involves keying claim information, downloading appropriate materials from NC Fast, and uploading the documents to the appropriate Medicaid claim. The Processing Center functions as the last step prior to disposition of claims. This unit ensures that all cases are closed and meet certain technical specifications, then transmits the federal claims decision and folder both electronically and physically back to an SSA component or the proper Disability Quality office.The Mailroom Clerk is responsible for sorting, opening, and distributing incoming mail and claims. Outgoing mail/cases are reviewed, boxed for mailing, prepared for shipment and dispersed to the appropriate pick-up/receiving area. A mailroom clerk is required to operate high speed digital printers and intelligent and non-intelligent high-speed mail insertion equipment to process customer documents. This work is in a fast-paced production environment with daily timelines to ensure the appropriate movement of incoming and outgoing correspondence. Mail procedures require the adherence to the USPS regulations governing mail and adherence to federal privacy regulations. The mailroom clerk must verify accuracy, perform troubleshooting, and correct incoming work in process. They must also align inserter operation to meet the needs of downstream processes. The mailroom clerk must set up and operate inserter equipment with precision, meet production targets and goals.
