Job description: CLASS SUMMARYNATURE OF WORK:Performs skilled technical and manual work in the commissioning, maintenance, and repair of City vehicles and heavy equipment; customizes installations and finds creative solutions to unique needs of City departments. Employee has routine contact with other employees and vendors. Moderate to close attention and care is required for accuracy and safety. Undetected errors or carelessness may cause loss of time or money. Work is medium in nature, requiring moderate agility to perform work within and on vehicles, and tolerance for adverse conditions such as tight spaces, exposure to electricity, and occasional exposure to varying weather. May be required to work odd and unusual hours.SUPERVISION:Works independently under general supervision and selects and develops own methods of accomplishment, accepting responsibility for assigned duties.SCHEDULE:Schedule will be determined as needed and may range from days, night, or weekends.EXAMPLES OF JOB FUNCTIONSThe following Responsibilities and Requirements are functions the individual who holds or desires the position must be able to perform unaided or with the assistance of a reasonable accommodation.Commissioning of Fleet vehicles:
- Installs various systems and parts to interior and exterior of vehicles and heavy equipment, including but not limited to: mobile communications equipment, speakers, emergency lighting, and sirens.
- Performs assembly and disassembly, including removal and reinstallation of seats, carpeting, interiors of doors, exterior body panels, and other interior and exterior parts.
- Assembles and runs electrical wiring to connect lights, sirens, and other warning devices from vehicle computer and power distribution systems to a control box, and insures proper function without compromising the interior or exterior fit and finishing, or safe operation of the vehicle.
- Fabricates brackets and interior parts to enable the professional installation of radios and other devices in vehicles.
Maintenance and troubleshooting:
- Confers with customers to determine the nature of problems.
- Performs visual inspections and uses testing instruments to locate and diagnose malfunctions.
- Utilizes schematic diagrams and operations manuals to perform basic repairs.
Performs related work as required: including but not limited to the following:
- Operates motor vehicles as necessary.
- Maintains proper stocking levels of installation supplies and required tools.
- Assists in the installation, alteration, and maintenance of non-vehicle electronic and radio communication equipment and systems as assigned.
- Maintains required records.
REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:
- Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, equipment and materials normally used in vehicle commissioning installations, maintenance, and repair work.
- Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards, safety methods, and precautions of the trade.
- Knowledge of the basic principles of electronics and electricity, and the hazards and precautions necessary to prevent injury when working with high voltage equipment.
- Some knowledge of mathematics adequate for solving electronic/electrical problems.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to perform assigned tasks independently, without close supervision.
- Ability to professionally disassemble and reassemble interior and exterior vehicle body parts, and skill in the use of necessary power tools, hand tools, and electronic equipment testing devices.
- Ability to use effective customer service skills, and to establish and maintain effective working relations.
- Ability to keep records on paper and by use of a computerized maintenance management system.
- Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening.
- Ability to pass criminal background check.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to read text such as written instructions and manuals.
- Ability to visually perceive and distinguish color coding and work on microelectronic circuits.
- Ability to converse on a two-way radio.
- Ability to detect sounds indicating proper functioning of equipment.
- Enough body mobility to work in tight spaces.
- Enough manual dexterity to handle precision tools and perform manual installation and fitting of parts.
- Enough strength to lift and handle materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Tolerance to work under adverse conditions, such as inclement weather.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent and;
- Three (3) years of work experience as an electronics or communications technician, including at least six (6) months performing vehicle electronics installations.
- One (1) year of relevant course work at a vocational school or college may substitute for one (1) year of the non-vehicle work experience requirement.
- All applicants must possess a valid driver’s license.
