Esteemed faculty provide an intense, professional-level learning environment that fosters experimentation, boundary crossing, and the development of hybrid processes.Sculpture, Installation, and Site area of the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University is searching for a part-time (20 hours a week/ 600 hours over the academic year) Physical Computing Intern. This entry-level position is ideal for former art students with some familiarity of sculpture facilities, looking to learn more about the management of shops, to assist the current technician, and help serve the larger School of Art community. This position will assist technician Jenna Boyles in the management of the Physical Computing Lab, PC + 3D Printing Lab, Soft Sculpture Lab, and CNC Router and Laser Cutter Labs.Core responsibilities include:
- Work alongside SOA SIS Technicians to further improve SIS fabrication facilities
- Provide supervision, administration, and maintenance of machines and tools in the labs and shops listed under the position
- Assist with management of student monitors for the various facility areas in Doherty Hall.
- Assist students, faculty and staff with the proper and safe use of shops and equipment, overseeing and enforcement of EHS safety rules and guidelines.
- Report supplies needs to the school SIS Technicians
- Assist in management of equipment lending
- Assist with various internal School of Art shop improvement projects.

Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree (BFA or BXA) is required.
- Experience with digital fabrication, physical computing, 3D printing, and sewing. Beginner level knowledge is fine if you have an interest to learn more.
- Some computing knowledge of Rhino, RhinoCAM, Adobe Illustrator, processing, arduino is ideal
- Or a combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge
Requirements:
- Must be able to work at least 20 hours per week and is entitled to a total of 300 hours per semester.
- Preferred candidate should be available for both Fall and Spring semesters
